‘Deposit protection schemes a success’ says Housing Minister

Speaking at the RESI 2013 conference in Wales today, Housing Minister Mark Prisk stated that Britain’s housing crisis could only be solved by combining strategies on home ownership, social housing and the private rented sector.

He recognised pivotal role that the private rented sector (PRS) has to play in meeting the housing demand in the face of the challenges the governement has faced in  building enough new houses, and the issues surrounding affordability of homes for large parts of the population.

Taking a range of questions from the floor of the conference, Prisk also stated that the tenancy depositschemes, such as my|deposits.co.uk, were operating well and were considered a success. He also fielded questions on the issue of the formation of a national register of landlords, which he stated the government did not support.

Also on the issue of regulation, Prisk reiterated that formal regulation of letting agents was not a policy priority. However, he suggested that the change in law next year, which will require all letting and managing agents to become a member of a recognised ombudsman scheme, should also include the provision of mandatory client money protection insurance as part of agents’ codes of conduct.

Away from property, the Minister also explained his support for the controversial HS2 scheme and the need to finally fix the problems of capacity and ageing infrastructure on the country’s rail network.

Eddie Hooker, CEO of my|deposits, attending the conference, said

“It is encouraging that the government recognises the importance of the private rented sector and the support that organisations such as my|deposits and CM Protect are playing in helping to raise standards within the industry”
