Time to check-out and graduate

It’s coming round to that time of year when students are cramming in revision time ready for those final exams or making the final preparations on that dissertation which has taken up the last eight months of their life.

The next year or graduation maybe just around the corner and as they say ‘the world is your oyster’ but it’s important for student tenants to remember there’s still work to be done when it comes to the uni house they’ve lived in for the past two or three years.

Here at mydeposits we get asked the same common questions all the time; ‘What happened to my deposit when I handed it over to my landlord/letting agent?’ ‘What do I have to do to receive my full deposit back?’

We receive many more questions on twitter or into our in-house call centre on a regular basis. We’re here to help and we’ll assist you as much as we can but remember there are also things you could be doing to help yourself.

Top five tips

1-Take care of the property and make sure it is cleaned (usually to a professional standard) when you’re ready to move out.

2-If you lived with housemates make sure they also leave their room clean as it could affect the whole deposit.

3-Carefully read the check-out inventory and make sure it matches the condition of the property when you moved in. This includes checking any furniture and any other items that were in the property. You can register for our inventory guideright here to ensure you have everything under control.

4-Be in attendance during the check-out inspection in case any questions come up.

5-It’s so important to have open communication with your landlord. If there’s any damage, be honest and don’t try and hide it. Your landlord will then be up front with you if any deductions on your deposit need to be made.

Almost 99% of tenancies end with no problems and as mentioned in one of the bullet points above this is down to communication. Open and frank chats with your landlord will mean everything is out in the open which also builds a more positive and open tenant/landlord relationship.

If you do feel there is a dispute you have three months after the end of your tenancy to raise a formal dispute with your scheme.
